Professor Garry E. Hunt

Professor Garry E. Hunt, Ph.D., DSc, FInst D, CSci, CMath, FIMA, FRMS has been an active member of The Planetary Society since its formation and a tireless communicator — as both a speaker and author — of the results of space exploration to audiences all over the world. A former staff member of JPL, he was actively involved in all the planetary missions of the 70–90s, but principally with the Voyager mission as one of the original members of the Imaging Team. He is currently on the Advisory Board of The Planetary Society.
 
Garry is Fellow of Institute of Directors, Fellow of Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (Councillor 2001–2003), Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, member of the American Geophysical Union, member of International Astronomical Union (past President Commission 16 The Planets), and Corresponding Member of International Academy of Astronautics.
 
He authored The Planet Venus, was the editor of Recent Advances in Planetary Meteorology, and coauthored Atlas of Jupiter, Atlas of Saturn, Atlas of Uranus, and Atlas of Neptune with Patrick Moore.
 
Garry is an international business adviser, facilitator, with public, private and academic sector organizations throughout the world. Originally an international scientist, member of NASA (JPL/Caltech), from whom he holds 4 awards for his research activities, Garry Hunt has held many appointments in leading UK and US Universities as a Professor of Atmospheric Physics.
 
He is now Managing Partner of Elbury Enterprises, California, Chairman of the Ernst & Young Advisory Board on Technology, Communications, Media and Entertainment, visiting Professor at Kingston University Business School and other Business Schools in the UK and US, and is a member of the Industry Advisory Board, School of Technology, at Kingston University.
 
He has held Executive Directorships positions at PA Consulting Group, Logica Consultancy (CEO), and at ICL Group. He has held non executive Directorships with Fleishmann Hillard, Sequent Computers, EDS, International Imaging Systems (Silicon Valley USA), HW Group plc, Trustmarque plc, Access Conferences International, Globebyte, One Stop Click and Ernst & Young (EMEA).
 
Garry has an extensive business network and continues to carry out national and international ambassadorial activities for companies and governments, which have included being adviser to the President and Government of Sri Lanka on IT, adviser on public sector reform for the President and government of Guyana, adviser to NASSCON (India) on IT and telecommunications, and advising the government of Indonesia on corporate governance and development of business schools.
 
In 1979, Garry was awarded the status of Chartered Mathematician. In 1981, he received 2 NASA Awards for the Voyager Project with two additional NASA Awards in 1986 and 1990. In 1983, he received the Gaskell Medal from the Royal Meteorological Society. In 1989, he received the ITV/ITN Scientific Award of the Decade. In 1991, he was made a Freeman of the City of London. In 2002, he received a Queen’s Golden Jubilee award for his community activities and he was awarded the status of a Chartered Scientist in 2005.
 
He received a BSc Mathematics, 1st Class Honors, in 1964, a PhD Mathematical Physics in 1966, and a DSc Physics & Astronomy in 1981 — all at the University of London. F Inst D stands for Fellow of Institute of Directors, CSci stands for Chartered Scientist, CMath stands for Chartered Mathematician, and FIMA stands for Fellow of Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
