The boom is caused by promotion of dreams that are unachievable in the medium term, followed by a resulting reputation that AI can’t perform. It is highly unlikely that neocortical columns are the answer to intelligence. Maybe they are an important building block, and no small advance if they can be simulated. That’s a long, long way from embedding them into a true artificial intelligence. My assessment of this article? Classic example of manic AI overblown hype.
