Palm-Sized Powerhouse: RIKEN’s Handheld Terahertz Device to “X-Ray” Things Without Harmful Radiation https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/palm-sized-powerhouse-rikens-handheld-terahertz-device-to-x-ray-things-without-harmful-radiation https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/palm-sized-powerhouse-rikens-handheld-terahertz-device-to-x-ray-things-without-harmful-radiation#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2023 17:26:06 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/palm-sized-powerhouse-rikens-handheld-terahertz-device-to-x-ray-things-without-harmful-radiation

Using new palm-sized devices, RIKEN researchers may have finally harnessed the terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum to effectively ‘X-ray’ things without using harmful ionizing radiation.

Countless technologies—from smartphones and TVs to infrared instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or Webb) is an orbiting infrared observatory that will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope. It covers longer wavelengths of light, with greatly improved sensitivity, allowing it to see inside dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are forming today as well as looking further back in time to observe the first galaxies that formed in the early universe.

Webb Space Telescope Illuminates Earliest Strands of the Cosmic Web https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/webb-space-telescope-illuminates-earliest-strands-of-the-cosmic-web https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/webb-space-telescope-illuminates-earliest-strands-of-the-cosmic-web#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2023 17:25:53 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/webb-space-telescope-illuminates-earliest-strands-of-the-cosmic-web

Woven across our universe is a weblike structure of galaxies called the cosmic web. Galaxies are strung along filaments in this vast web, which also contains enormous voids. Now, astronomers using Webb have discovered an early strand of this structure, a long, narrow filament of 10 galaxies that existed just 830 million years after the big bang. The 3 million light-year.

A light year is the distance that a particle of light (photon) will travel in a year—about 10 trillion kilometers (6 trillion miles). It is a useful unit for measuring distances between stars.

AI Singularity realistically by 2029: year-by-year milestones https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/ai-singularity-realistically-by-2029-year-by-year-milestones https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/ai-singularity-realistically-by-2029-year-by-year-milestones#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2023 17:25:21 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/ai-singularity-realistically-by-2029-year-by-year-milestones

This existential threat could even come as early as, say, 2026. Or might even be a good thing, but whatever the Singularity exactly is, although it’s uncertain in nature, it’s becoming clearer in timing and much closer than most predicted.

AI is nevertheless hard to predict, but many agree with me that with GPT-4 we’re close to AGI (artificial general intelligence) already.

DARPA’S New SHIELD Program Plans to Purge Your Blood of Pathogens, Roomba-Style https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/darpas-new-shield-program-plans-to-purge-your-blood-of-pathogens-roomba-style https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/darpas-new-shield-program-plans-to-purge-your-blood-of-pathogens-roomba-style#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2023 17:24:53 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/darpas-new-shield-program-plans-to-purge-your-blood-of-pathogens-roomba-style

Welcome to this week’s installment of The Intelligence Brief… in recent days, DARPA has announced a new program that aims to protect warfighters from bloodstream infections caused by bacterial and fungal agents. This week, we’ll be examining 1) the announcement of the agency’s new SHIELD program, 2) past challenges that inspired the new DARPA initiative, and 3) how they say SHIELD will manage to clean your bloodstream, similar to a Roomba.

Quote of the Week

“If an alien visited Earth, they would take some note of humans, but probably spend most of their time trying to understand the dominant form of life on our planet – microorganisms like bacteria and viruses.”

DIAS turns to advanced AI to better predict space weather https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/dias-turns-to-advanced-ai-to-better-predict-space-weather https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/dias-turns-to-advanced-ai-to-better-predict-space-weather#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2023 17:24:42 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/dias-turns-to-advanced-ai-to-better-predict-space-weather

The ARCAFF project aims to use deep learning AI to make better predictions of space weather events and calculate how probable these predictions are, to help protect vital technology and infrastructure.

A new project led by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is using AI as a way of getting faster and more accurate warnings about space weather events like solar flares.

These solar flares have the potential to disrupt vital technologies and infrastructure, including radio communications, electrical power grids and navigation systems. They can also present risks to spacecraft and astronauts.

Silicon-based solar cells have a theoretical efficiency limit of around 30 per cent, but adding a perovskite layer enables new designs to harvest more energy.

BERLIN — A United Nations technology agency assembled a group of robots that physically resembled humans at a news conference Friday, inviting reporters to ask them questions in an event meant to spark discussion about the future of artificial intelligence.

The nine robots were seated and posed upright along with some of the people who helped make them at a podium in a Geneva conference center for what the U.N.’s International Telecommunication Union billed as the world’s first news conference featuring humanoid social robots.

Among them: Sophia, the first robot innovation ambassador for the U.N. Development Program, or UNDP; Grace, described as a health care robot; and Desdemona, a rock star robot. Two, Geminoid and Nadine, resembled their makers.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Human Tissue: A Comprehensive Atlas https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/unraveling-the-mysteries-of-human-tissue-a-comprehensive-atlas https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/unraveling-the-mysteries-of-human-tissue-a-comprehensive-atlas#respond Sat, 08 Jul 2023 17:22:32 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/07/unraveling-the-mysteries-of-human-tissue-a-comprehensive-atlas

Which types of cells can be located in various human tissues, and where? Which genes show activity in these individual cells, and which proteins can be identified within them? Detailed answers to these inquiries and more are expected to be supplied by a specialized atlas. This atlas will particularly elucidate how different tissues take shape during embryonic development and the underlying causes of diseases.

In the process of developing this atlas, the researchers have the goal to chart not just tissues directly procured from humans but also structures referred to as organoids. These are three-dimensional tissue aggregates that are grown in the lab and develop in a manner similar to human organs, albeit on a smaller scale.

“The advantage of organoids is that we can intervene in their development and test active substances on them, which allows us to learn more about healthy tissue as well as diseases,” explains Barbara Treutlein, Professor of Quantitative Developmental Biology at the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel.
