On its way to the Trojan swarms, the spacecraft made a pit stop at a rock named Dinkinesh — and the images it sent back revealed that this asteroid has its own moon.

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft on Wednesday encountered the first of 10 asteroids on its long journey to Jupiter.

The on Wednesday swooped past the pint-sized Dinkinesh, about 300 million miles (480 million kilometers) away in the beyond Mars. It was “a quick hello,” according to NASA, with the spacecraft zooming by at 10,000 mph (16,000 kph).

Lucy came within 270 miles (435 kilometers) of Dinkinesh, testing its instruments in a dry run for the bigger and more alluring asteroids ahead. Dinkinesh is just a half-mile (1 kilometer) across, quite possibly the smallest of the space rocks on Lucy’s tour.

NASA’s recovered Bennu asteroid samples show evidence of carbon and water, scientists say https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/nasas-recovered-bennu-asteroid-samples-show-evidence-of-carbon-and-water-scientists-say https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/nasas-recovered-bennu-asteroid-samples-show-evidence-of-carbon-and-water-scientists-say#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2023 22:23:34 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/10/nasas-recovered-bennu-asteroid-samples-show-evidence-of-carbon-and-water-scientists-say

Rocks and soil collected from the asteroid Bennu and brought back to Earth last month by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx probe are rich in carbon and contain water-bearing clay minerals that date back to the birth of the solar system, scientists said Wednesday. The discovery gives critical insight into the formation of our planet and supports theories about how water may have arrived on Earth in the distant past.

The clay minerals “have water locked inside their crystal structure,” said Dante Lauretta, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona and the principal investigator of the asteroid sample return mission, while revealing initial photographs of the material.

India’s Moon Lander Fails to Awaken After Long Lunar Night https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/indias-moon-lander-fails-to-awaken-after-long-lunar-night https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/indias-moon-lander-fails-to-awaken-after-long-lunar-night#respond Fri, 29 Sep 2023 00:29:56 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/indias-moon-lander-fails-to-awaken-after-long-lunar-night

India became only the fourth nation ever to land a spacecraft on the Moon earlier this summer. The Chandrayaan-3 mission is still technically underway, but its days may be numbered. After waiting several weeks for the lunar night to end, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reports that the mission’s Vikram lander and Pragyan rover remain offline.

Chandrayaan-3 arrived in orbit of the Moon in July, right alongside Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft. The uncrewed missions were both angling to be the first to touch down in the Moon’s southern polar region, an area where NASA hopes to send astronauts in the coming years. Russia was on course to land first, but a system error caused the vehicle to crash instead. That left India to land at its leisure, which it did on Aug. 23.

According to the Chandrayaan-3 team, they’ve attempted to contact the lander and rover now that the sun is shining again. However, no signals have been received from the surface. It’s possible Vikram (see above) and Pragyan are well and truly dead after several weeks in the frigid night. However, the ISRO hasn’t given up hope. Even if the batteries are empty, the hardware may still be working. Given some time to soak in the rays, the robots could still come back online.

NASA’s First Asteroid Sample Has Landed, Now Secure in Clean Room https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/nasas-first-asteroid-sample-has-landed-now-secure-in-clean-room https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/nasas-first-asteroid-sample-has-landed-now-secure-in-clean-room#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2023 02:30:10 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2023/09/nasas-first-asteroid-sample-has-landed-now-secure-in-clean-room

After years of anticipation and hard work by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification and Security – Regolith Explorer) team, a capsule of rocks and dust collected from asteroid Bennu finally is on Earth. It landed at 8:52 a.m. MDT (10:52 a.m. EDT) on Sunday, in a targeted area of the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range near Salt Lake City.

Within an hour and a half, the capsule was transported by helicopter to a temporary clean room set up in a hangar on the training range, where it now is connected to a continuous flow of nitrogen.

Getting the sample under a “nitrogen purge,” as scientists call it, was one of the OSIRIS-REx team’s most critical tasks today. Nitrogen is a gas that doesn’t interact with most other chemicals, and a continuous flow of it into the sample container inside the capsule will keep out earthly contaminants to leave the sample pure for scientific analyses.
