Elon Musk is going to pay $100 million towards a prize to come up with the best carbon capture technology. (Or so he tweets. Details are scarce so far.)

The maverick tech CEO’s promise is not particularly notable for its generosity. With a net worth of over $200 billion, $100 million is 0.05% of Musk’s wealth.

But still, the richest person in the world’s tweet brings attention to an often-overlooked technology that has been around since the 1970s but has mostly been relegated to niche corners of the energy community.

The new ‘gold rush’ for green lithium https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2021/01/the-new-gold-rush-for-green-lithium Tue, 12 Jan 2021 19:22:17 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/01/the-new-gold-rush-for-green-lithium

All the clean technologies that we need to combat climate change – whether that’s wind turbines, solar panels or batteries, they’re all really, really mineral intensive.

Cornwall, 1864. A hot spring is discovered nearly 450m (1485ft) below ground in the Wheal Clifford, a copper mine just outside the mining town of Redruth. Glass bottles are immersed to their necks in its bubbling waters, carefully sealed and sent off for testing. The result is the discovery of so great a quantity of lithium – eight or 10 times as much per gallon as had been found in any hot spring previously analysed – that scientists suspect “it may prove of great commercial value”.

But 19th-Century England had little need for the element, and this 50C (122F) lithium-rich water continued steaming away in the dark for more than 150 years.

Fast forward to autumn 2020, and a site nearby the Wheal Clifford in Cornwall has been confirmed as having some of the world’s highest grades of lithium in geothermal waters. The commercial use for lithium in the 21st Century could not be clearer. It is found not only inside smart phones and laptops, but is now vital to the clean energy transition, for the batteries that power electric vehicles and store energy so renewable power can be released steadily and reliably.

Ambitious designs for underwater ‘space station’ and habitat unveiled https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2020/08/ambitious-designs-for-underwater-space-station-and-habitat-unveiled Sat, 29 Aug 2020 16:22:37 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2020/08/ambitious-designs-for-underwater-space-station-and-habitat-unveiled

Sixty feet beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea, aquanaut Fabien Cousteau and industrial designer Yves Béhar are envisioning the world’s largest underwater research station and habitat.

The pair have unveiled Fabien Cousteau’s Proteus, a 4,000-square-foot modular lab that will sit under the water off the coast of Curaçao, providing a home to scientists and researchers from across the world studying the ocean — from the effects of climate change and new marine life to medicinal breakthroughs.

Designed as a two-story circular structure grounded to the ocean floor on stilts, Proteus’ protruding pods contain laboratories, personal quarters, medical bays and a moon pool where divers can access the ocean floor. Powered by wind and solar energy, and ocean thermal energy conversion, the structure will also feature the first underwater greenhouse for growing food, as well as a video production facility.

The thrilling potential for off-grid solar energy https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2019/03/the-thrilling-potential-for-off-grid-solar-energy Sat, 23 Mar 2019 11:22:17 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2019/03/the-thrilling-potential-for-off-grid-solar-energy

There’s an energy revolution happening in villages and towns across Africa — off-grid solar energy is becoming a viable alternative to traditional electricity systems. In a bold talk about a true leapfrog moment, Amar Inamdar introduces us to proud owners of off-grid solar kits — and explains how this technology has the opportunity to meet two extraordinary goals: energy access for all and a low-carbon future. “Every household a proud producer as well as consumer of energy,” Inamdar says. “That’s the democracy of energy.” (Followed by a brief Q&A with TED Curator Chris Anderson)

Quantum Communication Just Took a Great Leap Forward https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2018/12/quantum-communication-just-took-a-great-leap-forward Thu, 27 Dec 2018 17:02:11 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2018/12/quantum-communication-just-took-a-great-leap-forward

Researchers in the field of quantum communication have recently made great strides, taking us closer to a perfectly secure method of communication.

For years, researchers struggled to find ways to amplify quantum signals, store large amounts of quantum data, and allow for more than two nodes in a quantum network. However, in the last two months, solutions to all three of these problems have been found using the bizarre properties of the quantum world, in particular quantum entanglement.

Now that these hurdles have been overcome, quantum networks and even a quantum internet seem like real possibilities.

China’s ‘artificial sun’ is now hot enough for nuclear fusion https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2018/11/chinas-artificial-sun-is-now-hot-enough-for-nuclear-fusion-2 Sun, 18 Nov 2018 14:42:18 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2018/11/chinas-artificial-sun-is-now-hot-enough-for-nuclear-fusion-2

On Tuesday, a team from China’s Hefei Institutes of Physical Science announced that its Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) reactor — an “artificial sun” designed to replicate the process our natural Sun uses to generate energy — just hit a new temperature milestone: 100 million degrees Celsius (180 million degrees Fahrenheit).

For comparison, the core of our real Sun only reaches about 27 million degrees Fahrenheit — meaning the EAST reactor was, briefly, more than six times hotter than the closest star.

How BrainNet Enabled 3 People to Directly Transmit Thoughts https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2018/10/how-brainnet-enabled-3-people-to-directly-transmit-thoughts Sun, 28 Oct 2018 21:22:12 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2018/10/how-brainnet-enabled-3-people-to-directly-transmit-thoughts

For a remarkably social species, we’re not particularly effective communicators.

Finding the right words to clearly, efficient transmit our thoughts to another consciousness—even something as simple as driving directions—can be a challenge, especially in-the-moment and under pressure.

What if we could do away with words altogether? What if, rather than relying on an intermediary, we could directly transmit our thoughts through a digital, internet-like space into another mind?

Can supplementation with NMN Increase Longevity? https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2018/10/can-supplementation-with-nmn-increase-longevity Sun, 07 Oct 2018 00:02:13 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2018/10/can-supplementation-with-nmn-increase-longevity

Recently, we have shown that by administering the NAD+ precursor NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide)in normal drinking water to older mice, NAD+ levels were restored to those normally associated with younger healthy animals. By administering NMN to mice for just one week, our lab demonstrated a robust correction in age-associated metabolic dysfunction and restored muscle mitochondrial function in old mice to levels seen in younger control mice (Gomes et al. 2013).

But the great potential of artificial intelligence shall become fully clear when considering its possible applications to drug discovery. It seems an era ago since the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003; since then, sequencing capabilities and softwares for data analysis rapidly established themselves as the new paradigm for drug discovery thanks to the increasing availability of IT technologies and the institutional and governmental support to big data analytics’ policies.

The exponential growth of the market

The annual growth rate of the market of artificial intelligence for healthcare applications has been recently estimated by Global Market Insights to be 40% CAGR (Compounded Average Growth Rate) per year up to 2024, starting from a value on $ 750 million in 2016.
