A California Experiment Gave People $500 A Month For Two Years. A study of a guaranteed income program in Stockton, California, found that after receiving an extra $500 in cash each month for a year, recipients had better job prospects and improved mental health.

As part of the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED) pilot program, 125 people in the California city received $500 per month for 24 months starting in February 2019. The program, initiated by former Mayor Michael Tubbs, chose recipients in neighborhoods at or below the city’s median household income of $46033. The money, in prepaid debit cards, was unconditional, meaning people could spend it as they chose.

A study released Wednesday based on the first year of the project, from February 2019 to February 2020, found that beneficiaries got full-time jobs at over twice the rate of non-recipients, were less anxious and depressed over time, and reported improvements in emotional health, well-being and fatigue.

Astronomers Have Discovered a Star That Survived Being Swallowed by a Black Hole https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2021/01/astronomers-have-discovered-a-star-that-survived-being-swallowed-by-a-black-hole Wed, 27 Jan 2021 00:23:23 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/01/astronomers-have-discovered-a-star-that-survived-being-swallowed-by-a-black-hole

I don’t think that star is the same after that one night stand.

When black holes swallow down massive amounts of matter from the space around them, they’re not exactly subtle about it. They belch out tremendous flares of X-rays, generated by the material heating to intense temperatures as it’s sucked towards the black hole, so bright we can detect them from Earth.

This is normal black hole behaviour. What isn’t normal is for those X-ray flares to spew forth with clockwork regularity, a puzzling behaviour reported in 2019 from a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy 250 million light-years away. Every nine hours, boom — X-ray flare.

After careful study, astronomer Andrew King of the University of Leicester in the UK identified a potential cause — a dead star that’s endured its brush with a black hole, trapped on a nine-hour, elliptical orbit around it. Every close pass, or periastron, the black hole slurps up more of the star’s material.

Our Brains Broadcast a Message We Don’t Understand https://russian.lifeboat.com/blog/2021/01/our-brains-broadcast-a-message-we-dont-understand Mon, 25 Jan 2021 02:24:13 +0000 https://lifeboat.com/blog/2021/01/our-brains-broadcast-a-message-we-dont-understand

Like periods in women, after a while our brains waves synchronise with the people we share our communications (family, friends, co-workers, church members, social media, etc.) so, it is good to know what are those and how they affect others and you.

InSight lander’s “mole” was unable to hammer through the Martian soil, and unusually dusty solar panels meant the robot was generating less power.
