Professor Chris Hables Gray

Chris Hables Gray, Ph.D. is Professor and Core Faculty, Interdisciplinary Studies at Graduate College, The Union Institute and University (TUIU). He is also Lecturer, Crown College, University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) and Lecturer, Humanities and Communication (HCOM), California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB).
 
Chris coedited Modified: Living as a Cyborg. His research interests include:

  • Postmodern politics: war and the possibilities for peace. He is especially interested in the relationship between technoscience and postmodern political institutions and processes, such as the evolution of democracy, nation-state devolution, empire, institutional and cultural internationalism, leadership, and the resurgence of nationalism and tribalism.
  • Information theory.
  • Political, artistic, and ethical implications of cyborgs. This work continues with such topics as brain monitoring and control technologies, and art theory and practice.
  • Computer-assisted learning (aka hybrid learning or distributed learning), in information technology and business, and many other practical issues of human-computer communication.
  • Social action research on the role of ethics and service in professional responsibility and definitions of citizenship including teaching cyber and bioethics to science students and supervising service learning at CSUMB.
Chris authored Cyborg Citizen: Politics in the Posthuman Age, Peace, War, and Computers, and Postmodern War: The New Politics of Conflict, edited The Cyborg Handbook and Technohistory: Using the History of American Technology in Interdisciplinary Research.
 
Chris earned his Bachelor’s of Arts degree with the Interdepartmental Major “Human Values and Social Change” from Stanford University in 1975. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in History of Consciousness at the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1991 with the dissertation “Computers as Weapons and Metaphors: The U.S. Military 1940–1990 and Postmodern War”.
