Manu Sebastian Mannoor

Manu Sebastian Mannoor is Research Assistant at the Microelectronics Research Center, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and is pursuing his graduate studies in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He has been actively engaged in research for the development of micro/nano fabricated sensing platforms for the electronic detection of biomolecular interactions.

Manu’s research interests include micro/nanofabrication, design and development of molecular scale biosensors for point of care diagnostic and lab-on-a-chip devices, micro fluidic analyte transport, and other MEMS/NEMS device structures with potential biomedical applications.

He is collaborating with Rational Affinity Devices LLC on the development of an innovative biochip device for the rapid and cost-effective diagnosis of infectious diseases. The shrinking of the size-scale of the sensing elements down to that of the molecules being sensed has provided better insight into the bio-molecular interactions, which was not previously attainable with macro or even micro scale sensor architectures.

This innovative biochip device uses precisely modulated electric and magnetic fields to enhance the speed and selectivity of the detection process through the controlled transport of analyte molecules. Once fully assembled, these robust, accurate and easy-to-use biochips will be capable of providing high-value diagnostic testing at the point of patient care places.

Manu’s recent research works in this direction has led to several publications in journals and proceedings, 2 invention disclosures for patents, and several speeches on his research activities at major international conferences. His publications include NEMS Capacitive Sensors for Highly Sensitive Label-Free Nucleic-acid Analysis, BioMEMS — Advancing the Frontiers of Medicine, Debye Capacitive Sensors for Biomolecular Detection, Micro/Nano Fabricated Biosensors for Point-of-Care-Diagnostics, and Active MOS Capacitive Sensor Array for Lab-On-a-Chip Applications.

Manu has also coauthored 2 review articles and a book chapter in BioMEMS. His recent speaking events include nanoTX’08 and NASA Tech Briefs – National Nano Engineering Conference.

Manu earned his B.S degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Calicut, India.
