Dr. Vasilii I. Artyukhov

Vasilii I. Artyukhov, Ph.D. is Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at Rice University and is News Editor at Eternal Mind (Russian) and was recently Research Scientist at Institute of Biology of Aging.

Vasilii is a computational chemist with broad scientific interests centered on nanotechnology. He is particularly interested in the exploratory and design role of molecular simulation in modern nanoscience/biology/chemistry/materials science.

He authored A Six Degree of Freedom Nanomanipulator Design Based on Carbon Nanotube Bundles and coauthored Structure and Layer Interaction in Carbon Monofluoride and Graphane: A Comparative Computational Study, Silica nanotube multi-terminal junctions as a coating for carbon nanotube junctions, New phase of polymeric C60: double chains via [2+2] cycloaddition, Theoretical Study of Two-Dimensional Silica Films, Graphane and Graphite Fluoride: Structure and Layer Interactions from First Principles, and Vacancy-patterned graphene: A meta-material for spintronics. Vasilii is a member of the Nanofactory Collaboration project. He has contributed research on electronic and magnetic properties of graphene, theory of chemical functionalization of carbon nanomaterials, and properties of inorganic and hybrid carbon inorganic nanostructures. Other past research directions of research ranged from searches for novel cryoprotectants to fundamental mechanisms of electron transfer in biological systems.

Besides fundamental scientific research, he has given popular talks on various topics ranging from broad-view perspective on nanotechnology to biological evolution and technological forecasting. He won Honorable Mention at the 2011 Artsutanov Prize hosted by the International Space Elevator Consortium for his work on mechanical properties and growth mechanisms of carbon nanotubes and graphene.

Vasilii earned his BSc in Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (PhysTech) in 2005. He earned his MSc in Physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (PhysTech) in 2007. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics at the Institute of Biochemical Physics RAS in 2010.
