Professor Edward A. Ratovitski

Edward A. Ratovitski, Ph.D., DSc is Professor of Dermatology, Pathology, Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Oncology and Associate Director of the Head and Neck Cancer, Research Division, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His fields of interest include: tumor suppressor/oncogenes, cancer biology, developmental disorders, ectodermal dysplasia, transcription, RNA splicing, protein-protein interactions, protein kinases, DNA damage, stress, nitric oxide synthase, cytokine/mitogens/receptors, and signaling.
 
Ed’s papers include Identification of mRNAs encoding two different soluble forms of the human interferon alpha-receptor, Differential tyrosine phosphorylation of the IFNAR chain of the type I interferon receptor and of an associated surface protein in response to IFN-alpha and IFN-beta, Midkine Induces Tumor Cell Proliferation and Binds to a High Affinity Signaling Receptor Associated with JAK Tyrosine Kinases, Kalirin Inhibition of Inducible Nitric-oxide Synthase, An Inducible Nitric-oxide Synthase (NOS)-associated Protein Inhibits NOS Dimerization and Activity, Intersection of Interferon and Hypoxia Signal Transduction Pathways in Nitric Oxide-induced Tumor Apoptosis, AIS is an oncogene amplified in squamous cell carcinoma, p53 associates with and targets ΔNp63 into a protein degradation pathway, AEC-Associated p63 Mutations Lead to Alternative Splicing/Protein Stabilization of p63 and Modulation of Notch Signaling, and Overexpression of Glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) Transamidase Subunits Phosphatidylinositol Glycan Class T and/or GPI Anchor Attachment 1 Induces Tumorigenesis and Contributes to Invasion in Human Breast Cancer. His patents include p40 protein acts as an oncogene and Soluble interferon α-receptor, its preparation and use.
 
Ed earned his MSc (1973) in Biology/Biochemistry at the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) State University, Soviet Union (now Russia); his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology/Oncology (1979) at the Petrov Cancer Research Institute, Leningrad (St. Petersburg, Russia) in 1979; and his DSc (1989) in Molecular and Cell Biology at the the Russian Academy of Sciences. His awards include Israel Anticancer Association Research Investigator Award (1991), British Council and Clore Foundation Research Scholar Award (1992), Research Investigator for Mid-Atlantic Cardiovascular Associates Award (1997), American Association for Cancer Research Investigator Award (1999), National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasia Achievement Award (2005), and Who’s Who In Health Care and Medicine (2006).
