Professor Sumeet Dua
Sumeet Dua, B.E., M.S., Ph.D. is a recognized computer scientist
specializing in the design of data mining technologies and
bioinformatics algorithms. He specializes in the design of algorithms
for analysis of microarray gene expression and protein
sequence/structure data to help fuel physiological information
discovery.
With more than ten years of experience, Sumeet brings unique
multidisciplinary expertise and insight. He has taken
leadership roles in several large-scale IT projects and is frequently
invited to give talks about data mining, bioinformatics, and clinical
informatics, and to serve on national scientific review panels.
Sumeet is currently the Upchurch Endowed Associate Professor of Computer
Science and Coordinator of IT Research at Louisiana Tech University,
Ruston, LA, USA. He is also an adjunct faculty at the School of
Medicine, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New
Orleans.
The National Science Foundation (NSF), the
National Institutes
of Health (NIH), the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the
Louisiana Board of Regents (LA-BoR) have funded more than $2.4 million
of his research in the past 5 years. He is also an active participant in
several federal projects, which amount to funding of more than $20
million. He frequently serves as a Study Section Member of the Special
Emphasis Panel at the NIH, and as a panelist for the NSF. He is
frequently invited to give talks at leading academic institutions,
conferences, and industrial centers at national and international
venues. He also serves on the LA-BoR Speaking of Science Speakers’
Bureau.
Sumeet has received numerous awards including the Engineering and
Science
Foundation Award for Faculty Excellence awarded in 2006 and the Faculty
Research Recognition Award presented in 2007, and was granted early
tenure and promotion in 2007 at Louisiana Tech University. He has
advised more than 22 graduate students who have found positions in
leading industrial and academic institutions, including IBM, Oracle, and
Philips Research.
His areas of expertise include database mining, pattern recognition,
data warehousing, clinical informatics, and bioinformatics, and he has
authored several publications in these areas. He is a senior member
of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a
senior member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a
regular member of Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers
(SPIE), the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB), and
the American Association for Advancement of Science
(AAAS).
