Dr. Jean-Marc Lemaitre

Jean-Marc Lemaitre, Ph.D. is Deputy Research Director at the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Biotherapy in Montpellier (IRMB), Leader of the INSERM research team, and Director of a stem cell facility CHU (SAFE-iPSC). He is an expert in the mechanisms of aging and longevity.

IRMB gathers scientists and clinicians on regenerative medicine and innovative immunotherapies. The Institute is associated with the University Hospital of Montpellier (CHU Montpellier), INSERM, and the University of Montpellier (UM).

The aim of IRMB is to facilitate the transfer of research on stem cell biology to clinical applications in coordination with clinical specialists in chronic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, lung disease, liver disease, neurodegenerative disease, aging, rare genetic diseases, autoinflammatory disorders, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders).

INSERM is the National Institute of Health and Medical Research. Its goal is to improve the health of all by advancing knowledge of life and disease, innovation in treatment, and public health research.

Jean-Marc earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology of Development at the Jacques Monod Institute of the University of Paris 7 in 1995.

After fifteen years of work on genome replication during embryonic development, as CNRS Research Engineer, he joined the Institute of Human Genetics in Montpellier in 1998, and became a Senior Scientist at INSERM in 2004.

He was awarded in 2006 for an AVENIR INSERM Team program to start a research team at the Functional Genomics Institute of Montpellier on the reprogramming of aging phenotype.

In 2011, Jean-Marc demonstrated with his team that it is possible to reprogram the senescent cells of centenarians to rejuvenate them, demonstrating for the first time that cellular aging is a reversible process. In 2015, he became Deputy Director of the IRMB and Director of the Cell Reprogramming Laboratory of the Montpellier University Hospital, labeled National Infrastructure in Health Biology of the INGESTEM consortium.

Jean-Marc is regularly invited as a speaker and has been invited to more than 50 national and international conferences and seminars in France and abroad in the last few years.

He was invited to the 9th International Conference and Exhibition on Tissue Engineering and Biobanking & Tissue Science and Regenerative Medicine, Tomorrow, forever young, How to cure old age, Reprogramming towards pluripotency as a new paradigm for cell rejuvenation, and The 8th and 9th Aging Research and Drug Discovery Meeting (ARDD 2021 & ARDD 2022).

His INSERM research team is made up of around twenty people and was certified by the National League against Cancer in 2015.

Author of more than 60 publications, Jean-Marc continues his work on understanding the mechanisms of aging. He develops strategies to restore the functionality of tissues and organs altered by aging. He recently demonstrated that a single short reprogramming apply early in mice increase longevity of 15%, improve body composition lifelong and prevent age related tissue deterioration (Alle et al., Aging Cell 2022)

Cofounder of two startups, in 2022 he published the book, Guérir la Vieillesse, prefaced by Luc Ferry, philosopher and former Minister.
