Professor Lijie Grace Zhang

Lijie Grace Zhang, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Engineering and Applied Science, Director of the Bioengineering Laboratory for Nanomedicine and Tissue Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Science, The George Washington University.

Grace’s research interests include biomimetic nanomaterials for bone tissue engineering and orthopedic applications, stem cell therapy for tissue regeneration, sustained drug delivery systems for biomedical applications, and cartilage tissue engineering.

She has published 5 book chapters related to bone tissue engineering and nanotechnology fields, over 12 papers in Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering, Nanotechnology, etc., and presented her work at over 18 conferences. In addition, her research was highlighted on NBC nightly news as an example of the future of medicine (May 14, 2007). She was also the recipient of the Society for Biomaterials STAR Awards in 2007 (Chicago, IL) and in 2009 (San Antonio, TX).

Her publications include The Role of Tissue Engineering in Articular Cartilage Repair and Regeneration, Carbon nanofibers and carbon nanotubes in regenerative medicine, Biologically inspired rosette nanotubes and nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite hydrogel nanocomposites as improved bone substitutes, and Arginine-glycine-aspartic acid modified rosette nanotube—hydrogel composites for bone tissue engineering,

Grace earned her B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 2001 and M.S. in Applied Chemistry in 2004, both from Tianjin University in China. She then earned a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Brown University in 2007 and her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Brown University in 2009. She was listed in Who’s Who in America in 2010.
