Dr. Nuno R. B. Martins

Nuno R. B. Martins, Ph.D. is an Affiliated Researcher at the Center for Research and Education in Aging (CREA), University of California, Berkeley. He is a polymath, a researcher, an entrepreneur, a public speaker, and a life and health extension advocate. He is interested in technological developments with the potential to solve humanity’s most challenging problems in healthcare, education, work, and humanity’s existential risks, among others.

Nuno is currently focused on developing technologies that will hopefully have a significant impact on human healthy life extension. His published papers involve several fields of research, for example, quantitative neuroscience, computer science, nanotechnology, robotics, and others.

Between 2016 and 2019, he was an affiliated researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, LBNL, in the United States.

Nuno’s Human Brain/Cloud Interface paper, published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience, has more views than 99% of all Frontiers articles. The journal Frontiers in Neuroscience is the world’s most-cited journal in the field of neuroscience. Nuno’s scientific work has involved collaborations with worldwide universities, including the University of California San Diego, University of Miami, Duke University, Moscow State Medical University, Purdue University, Monash University, Institute for Molecular Manufacturing, among others.

His research work has been featured in the world’s media, including Fox News Channel, New York Post, The SUN, Daily Mail, Irish Times, Science Daily, The Times of India, National Geography Poland, among other worldwide media.

In 2015, Nuno published his Action Potential Monitoring Using Neuronanorobots: Neuroelectric Nanosensors paper and founded the company Neuronanorobotics. This company offers an ideal technology for monitoring, recording, and even manipulating many different types of brain-related information, and is expected to permit preserving comprehensive human brain information.

He continued with publishing Human Connectome Mapping and Monitoring Using Neuronanorobots in the Journal of Evolution and Technology in 2016, where he proposed three specific classes of neuronanorobots, named endoneurobots, gliabots, and synaptobots, which together can non-destructively map and monitor structural changes occurring on neurons and synapses in the human brain, while also recording the synaptic-processed spikes carrying electrical functional information processed in the neuronal and synaptic network. Medical neuronanorobots are expected to be capable of real-time monitoring of single-neuron neuroelectric activity, local neuropeptide traffic, and other relevant functional data. Employment of large numbers of cooperating neuronanorobots might permit simultaneous whole-brain monitoring.

Nuno also founded Dream Versatility, a business group that has helped develop a large diversity of businesses in different areas, such as education, healthcare, business consulting, information technologies, and others.

Nuno is a board member at life extension related organizations and companies. Early in his life, motivated to take control of his own health, Nuno decided to make several courses related to healthcare, body training, and nutrition. He is a certified emergency medical technician and he is a teacher of several sports: a swimming teacher, a professional tennis teacher, a bodybuilding and aero-fitness teacher, and a powerlifting teacher. He also completed a course in nutrition.

He graduated from the inaugural year of the Singularity University at NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California in August 2009. Singularity University (SU) is an interdisciplinary university (based at the NASA Ames campus in Silicon Valley) whose mission is to assemble, educate, and inspire a cadre of leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies in order to address humanity’s grand challenges. He was awarded a full scholarship of $25,000 to attend Singularity University. He was also awarded with the prize “Seeds of Science Junior 2010”.

Nuno earned his Ph.D. in Nanomedicine from Universidade do Minho, Portugal in 2016 with the thesis Neuronanorobotics: A Proposed Medical Technology To Preserve Human Brain Information. Prior to finishing his Ph.D., Nuno published the paper Non-destructive whole-brain monitoring using nanorobots: Neural electrical data rate requirements where he introduced the idea of Neuronanorobotics and later expanded it in his thesis.

He has a licentiate (Bachelor) in mathematics. In each of his five years as a student, he received merit awards and at the end of his licentiate he received an academic merit award, awarded by the Portuguese government. While still a 4th year student, and after finishing his licentiate, he was a teaching assistant in calculus and mathematical logic.

Nuno created his own company to fund his education. Along the way, several academic awards and grants contributed to his funding strategy. He is a board member of several organizations and companies, including Coalition for Radical Life Extension. One of those organizations has contributed more than 100 million in funding for scientific research. He also assumes the responsibility of several financial fiduciary roles for high net worth individuals and organizations.

Nuno has participated in several international major conferences attended by thousands of participants. In those international conferences he has shared the stage with several celebrities, such as Raymond Yang, co-founder & managing partner of WestSummit Capital; Jack McCauley, co-founder, Oculus VR; Jun Wu, founding partner of Amino Capital; Steve Westly Managing Partner of Westly Group; Xiang Qian, Medical Director of Stanford Health Care; Noel Lee, Founder and CEO of head monster products Inc; visionary billionaire Peter Nygard; the inspiring Suzanne Somers; world famous futurist Ray Kurzweil; and Artificial Intelligence pioneer Ben Goertzel, among many other celebrities.
