Professor Pier Marzocca

Pier Marzocca, Ph.D. is Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering, Clarkson University.

Pier’s research efforts focus mainly on aero-thermo-elasticity, fluid-structure interactions, linear/nonlinear structural dynamics, aeroelastic stability and control, unsteady aerodynamics, aerodynamic shaping and morphing concepts, smart materials and control actuators, unmanned-air-vehicles (UAV), inflatable structures, and wind energy concepts. His success in such research requires the development and integration of a number of disciplines including modern aeroelasticity, structural mechanics, unsteady aerodynamics, feedback control methodologies, advanced composite material structures, and dynamics of multi-body systems.

He coauthored Active Aeroelastic Control of Lifting Surfaces via Jet Reaction Limiter Control, Flight control, Data Acquisition, and Payload Integration for An Aerosol Sampling Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Effect of the Stiffness and Inertia of a Rib Reinforcement on Localized Bending Waves in Semi-Infinite Strips, Controlling Chaotic Motions of a Nonlinear Aeroelastic System Using Adaptive Time Delay Feedback Control, Nonlinear Aeroelastic Behavior of Flexible High-Aspect Ratio Wings, and 3-D Thermo-Mechanical Analysis of Friction Stir Welding of Dissimilar Metals Using Functionally Graded Material Concept.

Pier earned his B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino, Italy in 1994 and his M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in 1996 with the thesis “Manufacturing of a 6 meters wing-box and theoretical/experimental analysis of structures in composite materials for solar energy electrical gliding”. He earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at Politecnico di Torino in 2000 with the dissertation “Studies on Linear and Nonlinear Aeroelasticity of Lifting Surfaces Approached Via New Techniques”.
