Dr. Tim Peterson

Tim Peterson, Ph.D. is CEO and Founder of BIOIO and of Healthspan Technologies. He is also a Core Member of the Longevity Working Group at VitaDAO.

BIOIO was founded by Tim in 2017 with the goal to better understand how drugs work. In particular, they leverage their learnings on how widely used medicines, such as rapamycin, metformin, bisphosphonates, and antidepressants, work. This led them to define a gold standard for drug Mechanism of Action (MoA) elucidation, leading to their genetics-based MOAT platform.

The elucidation of a compound’s Mechanism of Action (MoA) is a challenging task in the drug discovery process, but it is important in order to rationalize phenotypic findings and to anticipate potential side-effects. Read Novel insulin-sensitizing NASH/diabetes drugs.

Their process has become increasingly big data-driven and automated which is the key to accelerating drug development. Their team has evolved to add these in silico skills to virtualize their wet lab. In biology and other experimental sciences, an in silico experiment is one performed on computer or via computer simulation. At Healthspan, Tim is targeting aging with a holistic approach. By focusing on pathogens that are associated with age-related disease, using the science of vaccination, we can reduce the prevalence of chronic conditions. Aging is a process connected to a diverse set of molecular mechanisms. His focus is on pathogens that cause these mechanisms to accelerate aging processes.

Tim is also in The Longevist group, where he is, together with other experts, curating the most exciting longevity research. Tim is also a regular speaker at workshops and conferences, including the Emerging Science & Technologies Workshop.

Previously, Tim was Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. His work focused on both the environmental and genetic basis of aging. His group at his Lab focused on aging and mental health. Some of his projects were working with Senolytics, testing of popular longevity supplements, and doing a molecular diagnostic for Mood.

Tim earned his Ph.D. in Biology in 2010 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) where he worked on the mTOR pathway with the thesis The localization of mTORC1 signaling. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Michigan in 1999.

After his Bachelor’s, he was a Medical Student at Washington University in St. Louis for two years until 2004. He continued as a Graduate Student at MIT for six years until he got his Ph.D. Between 2011 and 2016, Tim was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University.
