A medical domain AI developed by Google Researchers broke records on its ability to pass medical exam questions, but more surprisingly generated answers that were consistently rated as better than human doctors. While the study notes several caveats, it marks a significant milestone in how AI could upend a number of professions.

Changing this dynamic requires not just new technology, but a different way of thinking about automation. Real worksites have clutter, traffic, patchy wifi, and a host of other routine inconveniences that serve as barriers tor automation. And real people have real jobs to do—requiring training, institutional knowledge, prioritization, collaboration, and other skills that are impossible to automate.

Automation tools need to be dynamic to add value and act as an extension of these teams, fitting into their current workplace, amplifying their expertise, going places they can’t, and completing tasks they don’t have time for. In short, making their jobs easier, not more complicated.

Artificial intelligence could potentially replace 80% of jobs “in the next few years,” according to AI expert Ben Goertzel.

Goertzel, the founder and chief executive officer of SingularityNET, told France’s AFP news agency at a summit in Brazil last week that a future like that could come to fruition with the introduction of systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

“I don’t think it’s a threat. I think it’s a benefit. People can find better things to do with their life than work for a living… Pretty much every job involving paperwork should be automatable,” he said.

Incapable of replicating on their own, viruses must hijack other organisms, like bacteria, to continue their existence. Little wonder, then, that bacteria had to develop ways to fight back.

Among them is CRISPR, a kind of an immune system that keeps DNA records of previous infections and then uses a protein called Cas to attack viruses that show up again. When Cas reaches a targeted virus, it cleaves the viral DNA, protecting the bacteria from infection.

Researchers have harnessed that targeted, DNA-snipping ability as a gene editing tool for all kinds of organisms. CRISPR can now be found in a variety of fields doing a variety of jobs, from helping to fight sickle cell and high cholesterol in humans to gene editing animals and crops. It’s proven to be an amazingly versatile tool.

Tools such as DALL – E 2 and ChatGPT have the potential to crush the “competition” because they can do specific creative tasks faster and, in some cases, better than humans. This may sound scary for the people behind the desk; however, as phenomenal as these tools are, they are not infallible. These LLMs are not without their limits. They are vulnerable to inconsistent accuracy, limited creativity and controllability and may provide outdated information.

Despite their significant strengths, they present users with challenges that must be addressed to optimize their potential fully. What this means for those threatened by the existence of AI is the need to step up their game and upskill to remain competitive.

The evolution of technology will continue, addressing the gaps in many different industries to benefit society. Creatives, including digital marketers, copywriters and designers, have already recognized the potential benefits of AI-powered tools. So, the question shouldn’t be whether AI will take over your jobs but how you’ll adapt.
