Researchers develop programmable optical device for high-speed beam steering

Posted by in category: holograms

In a scene from “Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope,” R2D2 projects a three-dimensional hologram of Princess Leia making a desperate plea for help. That scene, filmed more than 45 years ago, involved a bit of movie magic—even today, we don’t have the technology to create such realistic and dynamic holograms.

Generating a freestanding 3D hologram would require extremely precise and fast control of light beyond the capabilities of existing technologies, which are based on liquid crystals or micromirrors.

An international group of researchers, led by a team at MIT, has spent more than four years tackling this problem of high-speed optical beam forming. They have now demonstrated a programmable, wireless device that can control light, such as by focusing a beam in a specific direction or manipulating the light’s intensity, and do it orders of magnitude more quickly than commercial devices.

Black Holes and Holograms: A New Theory That Changes Our Understanding of the Universe

Posted by in categories: cosmology, holograms, quantum physics

Confusing? It may sound so, but it isn’t actually. What Benini and Milan have done is apply the theory of the holographic principle to black holes. In this way, their mysterious thermodynamic properties have become more understandable: by focusing on predicting that these bodies have high entropy and looking at them in terms of quantum mechanics, which allows us to describe them as a hologram: they have two dimensions, in which gravity disappears, but they reproduce an object in three dimensions.

But there’s more. Much more.

According to the authors of the new studies, this is only the first step towards a deeper understanding of these cosmic bodies and the properties that characterize them when quantum mechanics intersects with general relativity.

Diffraction model-informed neural network for unsupervised layer-based computer-generated holography

Posted by in categories: holograms, robotics/AI

Learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) has shown remarkable promise to enable real-time holographic displays. Supervised CGH requires creating a large-scale dataset with target images and corresponding holograms. We propose a diffraction model-informed neural network framework (self-holo) for 3D phase-only hologram generation. Due to the angular spectrum propagation being incorporated into the neural network, the self-holo can be trained in an unsupervised manner without the need of a labeled dataset. Utilizing the various representations of a 3D object and randomly reconstructing the hologram to one layer of a 3D object keeps the complexity of the self-holo independent of the number of depth layers. The self-holo takes amplitude and depth map images as input and synthesizes a 3D hologram or a 2D hologram. We demonstrate 3D reconstructions with a good 3D effect and the generalizability of self-holo in numerical and optical experiments.

How Real Holograms are Created by Artificial Intelligence (Lightfield)

Posted by in categories: holograms, robotics/AI

Commercial Holograms may soon get into the hand of regular consumers with the help of the biggest Hologram company called Lightfield. Holography is a technique that enables a wavefront to be recorded and later re-constructed. Holography is best known as a method of generating three-dimensional images, but it also has a wide range of other applications. In principle, it is possible to make a hologram for any type of a light field.

Hologram Technology Allows Woman To Answer Questions At Her Own Funeral

Posted by in categories: holograms, robotics/AI

An AI-driven chatbot technology has allowed one woman to answer questions from beyond the grave at her own funeral, with mourners able to dive into her fascinating life in a morbid but futuristic tribute. The technology was provided by her son, who runs a company that creates “holographic conversational video experiences”, and allowed Holocaust campaigner Marina Smith MBE to be “present, in a sense”, according to son Stephen Smith, reports the Telegraph.

Mrs Smith passed away in June of this year and her funeral was held shortly after in Nottinghamshire, UK. Having led a meaningful life educating people about the Holocaust, her family wished for her message to continue after her death, and the holographic experience during her funeral allowed just that.

The experience used StoryFile, an AI conversational bot that uses 20 different cameras and recordings of the subject to create a digital, holographic clone that can be interacted with. While the experience was powered by AI, the answers given to questions were entirely Mrs Smith’s own words.

Holographic Conversational Video Experience allows you to communicate with deceased relatives

Posted by in categories: holograms, robotics/AI

The company StoryLife developed technology Holographic Conversational Video Experience that allows you to communicate with holograms of deceased relatives.

What we know

A U.S. startup has learned how to create a digital clone of a person before they die. It uses two dozen synchronized cameras to do so. They record answers to questions and then the resulting material is used to train artificial intelligence.

VIDEO: World’s first international holographic teleportation

Posted by in categories: holograms, space travel

Holographic teleportation is when a hologram is transmitted to a different location instantaneously.

While it is something that was only seen in SciFi movies like Star Wars, on July 27 at the Western Institute for Space Exploration (Western Space), the world’s first-ever international holoport was demonstrated.

The world’s first-ever international holographic teleportation has just been conducted

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, holograms

Holographic teleportation could solve the many issues that 2D virtual meetings have these days. Besides, you could simply beam into work while at home.

Researchers at the University of Western Ontario recently completed the world’s first-ever international holographic teleportation.

Researchers achieve world’s first international holographic teleportation

Posted by in categories: holograms, space travel

Holographic teleportation sounds like something out of Star Wars or Star Trek, but instead of the bridge of a flashy interstellar spaceship, a world-first technological achievement took place in a nondescript boardroom on campus at Western recently.

The term holographic teleportation, or holoport, is a combination of hologram and teleport: when a hologram of a person or object is transmitted instantaneously to another location.
