Robot to sit for China’s national college entrance exam

Posted by in categories: mathematics, robotics/AI

A Chinese robot is set to compete with grade 12 students during the country’s national college entrance examination next year and get a score qualifying it to enter first-class universities.

The robot being designed will appear in three exams – math, Chinese and a comprehensive test of liberal arts, which includes history, politics and geography, said Lin Hui, CEO of an artificial intelligence company in Chengdu.

The robot will have to finish the exams during designated periods like the other examinees. It will take its exams in a closed room with just proctors and a notary present.

Disrupting manufacturing: Innovation and the future of skilled labor

Posted by in categories: education, habitats, robotics/AI, security

Again, we all must ask ourselves “What is it that we all need and want v. being told what we need and want by a 20 something old who gets take out or heats up a tv dinner, etc. And, truly what makes sense from an investment, ROI, and security risk adverse investment approach.” 1st, I like making and having my own choices in how I run my house, and operating style at work and private life. 2nd, I don’t trust our out dated digital infrastructure to warrant a great investment in all things AI.

Until I see AI that assist me instead of trying to work against me or replace me as well as having security; then not bought in 100%.

The U.S. manufacturing sector has changed rapidly in the last decade and continues to change as new techonolgy innovations emerge. Daniel Araya and Christopher Sulavik discuss how schools can react to educate a skilled labor force for this new era of robot technolgies.

Pre-programming Artificial Intelligence is a Risky Business

Posted by in categories: business, robotics/AI

Glad to see more folks understanding what I had shared 6 months ago about AI and having entire teams of comprised of the standard SV male. It doesn’t work for AI and will be a barrier in it’s adoption. AI (more than any technology to date) requires a multi-cultural diverse team that reflects the consumers that they are trying to cater to.

Until this one dimensional male dominated engeering teams become more diverse to align with the buying public along with improving the weak under lying connected infrastructure including the net are corrected; AI will not see it’s full potential in the market.

I will ask again, how does a 28 or 33 year male understand how a 48 or 51 year old woman who has been a famers wife feels and her needs; or how does a 28 year old male understands what a 38 or 40 year old female living in the Hamptons needs are for her home, or boutique spa shop geared to other women?.

Wow! SpaceX Nails Rocket Landing At Sea Again

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, space

For the second time in less than a month, SpaceX has landed the first stage of its Falcon 9 rocket on a ship at sea.

The booster settled softly onto the deck of SpaceX’s robotic “Of Course I Still Love You” droneship at 1:30 a.m. EDT (0530 GMT) on Friday (May 6), nine minutes after launching from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on a successful mission to carry the Japanese communications satellite JCSAT-14 to orbit.

Chants of “USA! USA! USA!” erupted at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California as the Falcon 9 stuck its landing on the ship, which was stationed about 200 miles (320 kilometers) offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. [Photos: SpaceX Launches Satellite, Lands Rocket at Sea].

How Artificial Intelligence Will Make You A Better Writer

Posted by in category: robotics/AI

My dream is to finally have an AI solution that is a mixture of Dragon meets, Amy meets a great editor and pr person to help me co-author a series of novels that I have been waiting for many years to write, publish, market and promote. Right now, you have Dragon or an experimental AI that writes the novel without any human input.

Textio, a service that helps job recruiters by flagging both good and poor phrasing, now aims to be a real-time writing coach.

An Autonomous Robot Surgeon Just Beat A Human Surgeon At Their Job

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, robotics/AI

Autonomous robot surgeon prototype stitches pigs’ colons better than human and human-assisted robot surgeons:

In his proof-of-concept study, the STAR system stitched together two parts of a pig’s colon. The researchers likened this task to reconnecting a cut garden hose—and just like the hose, if the stitching is done imperfectly, the colon can be prone to leaks that can be life-threatening. Using the vision system and a pressure sensor at the end of the robotic arm, the STAR tool automatically placed sutures in the tissue to reconnect it, both in tissue in the lab and inside living pigs. The researchers then compared the STAR’s performance to that of a surgeon performing the same task with a laparoscopic tool as well as a robot-assisted surgery in which the surgeon controls the robot.

Comparing the uniformity of the sutures, number of mistakes and the highest pressure that the tissue could withstand without leaking, the STAR system performed better than the human and the human-directed robot. None of the living pigs had any complications from the operations.

Unmanned robot surgery works in pig trial

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, neuroscience, robotics/AI

Here is the real challenge to ask the average parent or grandparent on the street: are you willing to allow your 5 year old child or grandchild to have a brain tumor removed by an autonomous robot without any trained & experienced surgeon or nurse supervision?

An unmanned robot has been used to stitch together a pig’s bowel, moving science a step closer to automated surgery, say experts.

Unlike existing machines, the Star robot is self-controlled — it doesn’t need to be guided by a surgeon’s hands.
