Astronauts that hibernate on long spaceflights is not just for sci-fi. We could test it in 10 years
Posted by Dan Breeden in category: space travel
“Of course, we need to finetune everything before we can apply it to humans. But I would say that 10 years is a realistic timeline,” Ngo-Anh said.
This fine-tuning is already underway. First studies have shown that it’s possible to induce torpor (opens in new tab) in otherwise non-hibernating animals, such as rats, and bring them safely back to life a few days later. The process of triggering hibernation is rather intricate and involves reduced exposure to daylight and a period of intense feeding followed by a strict fast.

Finding A New Use For The Oil Sands —The Carbon Fibre Grand Challenge
Posted by 21st Century Tech Blog in categories: particle physics, space travel
The province, however, is seeking a solution to its future relevance taking baby steps of which CFGC is one. Having said this, it still is an important initiative that could have enormous Canada-wide impacts.
What is carbon fibre?
Carbon fibre is less than a tenth the thickness of human hair. It contains carbon atoms almost exclusively. It is lightweight yet strong and can be bundled with other carbon fibres, woven, pressed and moulded. Carbon fibre material can be turned into tubes for bicycles, tennis rackets, and golf clubs. As a sheet, it can be moulded and turned into body parts for automobiles and trucks. Today, it is in the wings of modern aircraft replacing aluminum and steel. It is in Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket. And in construction, it can be used instead of concrete, brick, wood, and even steel.

UK to invest over $3 million in Rolls Royce’s Moon nuclear reactor
Posted by Gemechu Taye in categories: government, nuclear energy, space travel
Rolls-Royce is now aiming to “have a reactor ready to send to the Moon by 2029.”
The UK Space Agency (UKSA) said on Friday it would invest a significant amount in Rolls-Royce’s project to produce nuclear power on the moon.
The government agency will now invest £2.9 million (around $3.52 million) in the project in order to “deliver an initial demonstration of a UK lunar modular nuclear reactor.”

SpaceX now eyeing April for Starship’s 1st orbital launch, Elon Musk says
Posted by Genevieve Klien in categories: Elon Musk, space travel
SpaceX’s huge new Starship vehicle could launch on its first-ever orbital test flight a little over a month from now, if all goes according to plan.
SpaceX is now tentatively eyeing mid-to late April for that epic mission, which will lift off from the company’s Starbase facility in South Texas.

Beyond the International Space Station and 2030 What Will Be Happening In Low Orbit?
Posted by 21st Century Tech Blog in category: space travel
Commercial space stations will populate near-Earth orbit by 2030 when the ISS is decommissioned. This is the Orbital Reef, from Blue Origin, Sierra Space, Amazon, and Boeing.
NASA to build a space tug to take the ISS out of orbit. It will then rely on 4 or more commercial partner replacements for tenancies.

NASA Reveals Prototype Spacesuit The First Woman On The Moon Will Wear
Posted by Daniel Sunday in category: space travel
In the first public event presenting the Artemis III Lunar Space Suit, NASA revealed the prototype that will be worn by the first woman and person of color to go to the Moon. Made by Axiom Space, the next-gen spacesuit will eventually be white, but is currently on display with a black cover while they finalize the top layer’s final design.
The Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, or AxEMU (fingers crossed this is the brief for the mission’s zero-gravity indicator plushie), got a grand reveal at Space Center Houston’s Moon 2 Mars Festival. As a prototype, it’ll join a fleet of training suits sent to NASA later this year so that astronauts can begin preparing for the next crewed lunar landing, Artemis III, set to take place in 2025.
