Counting from left to right feels ‘natural,’ but new research shows our brains count faster from bottom to top

Posted by in categories: education, space

When asked to write the numbers from one to ten in a sequence, how do you order them? Horizontally? Vertically? Left to right? Top to bottom? Would you place them randomly?

It has been often been assumed, and taught in schools in Western countries, that the “correct” ordering of numbers is from left to right (1, 2, 3, 4…) rather than right to left (10, 9, 8, 7…). The ordering of numbers along a horizontal dimension is known as a “mental number line” and describes an important way we represent number and quantity in space.

Studies show humans prefer to position to the right and smaller numbers to the left. People are usually faster and more accurate at comparing numbers when larger ones are to the right and smaller ones are to the left, and people with that disrupts their spatial processing also show similar disruptions in number processing.

AIIMS Bilaspur ties up with IIT Mandi for drone delivery of medicines

Posted by in categories: biotech/medical, drones, education

While the OPD has been thrown open to the people, work is going on war footing as PM Modi is expected to inaugurate the hospital early next month. The hospital already has 25 transport ventilators from the PM CARES fund.

Any person coming for treatment will only have to pay Rs 10 in registration charges for a lifetime and there are nominal charges for treatment.

AIIMS Bilaspur is set up with the objectives of correcting regional imbalances in the availability of affordable/reliable tertiary healthcare services and also to augment facilities for quality medical education in the country.

MIT Scientists Release Open-Source Photorealistic Simulator for Autonomous Driving

Posted by in categories: education, robotics/AI, transportation

MIT researchers unveil the first open-source simulation engine capable of constructing realistic environments for deployable training and testing of autonomous vehicles. Since they’ve proven to be productive test beds for safely trying out dangerous driving scenarios, hyper-realistic virtual worlds have been heralded as the best driving schools for autonomous vehicles (AVs). Tesla, Waymo, and other self-driving companies all rely heavily on data to enable expensive and proprietary photorealistic simulators, because testing and gathering nuanced I-almost-crashed data usually isn’t the easiest or most desirable to recreate.

General Theory of General Intelligence: Critical Priors for Human-Like General Intelligence

Posted by in categories: blockchains, education, information science, robotics/AI, singularity

This is Episode 7 in a series of videos discussing the General Theory of General Intelligence as overviewed in the paper.
Goertzel, Ben. “The General Theory of General Intelligence: A Pragmatic Patternist Perspective.“
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2103.15100
This episode overviews ideas regarding how the particular nature and requirements of *human-like-ness* can be used guide the design and education of AGI systems. This is where cognitive science and computer science richly intersect. Core architectural ideas of OpenCog along with numerous other AGI systems (MicroPsi, LIDA, Aaron Sloman’s work,…) are reviewed in this context.
